Winter can be such a wonderful time, but a lot of us just let it pass by and wait for the warmer seasons. I know sometimes it’s due to a lack of motivation and energy (which is normal and perfectly fine – get all the rest you need), but I’ve also noticed a lot of us don’t really know what to do. Here are some low-budget friendly ideas on how to romanticize it and have some fun, even if it’s cold and dark outside.
Decorate your home cozy and with lots of lights
The ritual of decorating in winter has been around for ages (also non-Christmas-related), with the intention of bringing some light into the dark months. After I take down my Christmas decorations in January, I always redecorate (wintery) and leave it until spring starts.
What to use: cuddly things like blankets and pillows and lots of light – string lights, lamps and fake candles. The light from these should be warm, it gives a cozier vibe.
Set intentions/goals for the new year
Setting goals for life and wanting to improve yourself, is something to do the whole year round. However, a lot of people like to start with the beginning of a new year. Think about what you want to change, what you want to achieve and where you want to be after this year has passed.
Make a vision board
Now that you have set your goals, you should hold onto them, so you can check them throughout the year. A fun way to do this, is creating a vision board. It’s also a sweet activity to do together with friends. If you’d like some guidance and ideas, I have a post on how to create one.
Paint or draw a winter scene
If you like to paint, winter has some really beautiful sceneries, which might me fun to recreate.
Go for a walk in snowy winter wonderland
Apart from the fact that it’s great for your health, taking a walk after it has snowed is a must-do, because everything looks so magical.
I had this really cute idea of combining this idea with the last one: Take a walk through the snowy scenery, take some pictures of it, go back home and paint it.
Have a movie marathon
Pick out a couple movies or a new show, get some snacks and a drink, crawl under a warm blanket and get comfy for the next couple of hours.
Have a baking day
For me, winter is always the season for baking. It‘s cozy, and afterwards you have tasty treats to eat. I suggest picking out a few recipes – maybe there are some new ones you want to try, prepare all the needed ingredients and then just have fun bake day. You could also invite a friend for this.
Host a tasting night
If you like to have people over, a cozy dinner is the perfect thing to do in this cold weather. Of course a simple evening with friends and family is wonderful as it is, but there are also ways to make them a bit more interesting. One of those is to turn it into a tasting night.
You can do this with anything you like: from snacks, to wine, to desserts, drinks, new products, to whatever else you enjoy, and you can buy them or do them yourself, try out new recipes, bake something – the ideas are endless.
Have a game night
Similar to the one above and also very fun – pick out a couple of games you like, and invite people over to play them together.
Have a friend over and cook a three-course meal together
It’s perfect for winter and you can turn it into a sleepover or combine it with something else, like having a movie marathon, baking, making vision boards, doing some crafts, painting…
Go ice skating
A classic winter-bucket-list-item. I think it’s very romantic and you don’t have to worry about not being good at it, because if you’ve ever watched an ice rink, you’ll constantly see lots of people falling.
Go sledding
Because why not? I haven’t done this in such a long time, but it would probably make my inner child really happy and with the right friends it could be a lot of fun. The great thing about it is, you don’t have to travel to a ski region for this. You just need a small hill (make sure there are no roads nearby), a sled and some warm clothes.
Build a mini snowman
Also something for your inner child and since they’re small, they don’t take a lot of effort. I have made some mini snowmen on my garden table and just looking at them brings me joy.
Write a message to yourself
Thought this was a very cute idea. You can write yourself a letter for the end of 2026, or multiple messages to read throughout the year. You can put it in envelopes or make a note-jar. It can be motivation, reminders, self-love…
Reflect on the past year
I’ve read this on a lot of websites, but it never meant much to me, until I came up with some cute ways on how to do it. The key lies in focusing on the positive, being grateful and making the coming year even better.
There is a post on my blog with some fun ideas – check it out, if your interested.
Start a new routine
The cold months are perfect for starting some new routines, because you have some extra time on your hands. Plus, you’ll be where you want to be, by the time spring starts.
It can be anything from stretching, to exercising, meal prep, hair care, reading, studying…
Make sure you start small, you don’t want to scare yourself off.
I hope you’ve found something to do in this list, or at least some inspiration, and I wish you a lot of fun, light, love and cozy moments for this winter!❄️
